Karytaina Ancestry is a volunteer and self-funded initiative driven by the desire to find our families and bring their stories to everyone who has roots in Karytaina.
Kartyaina was once a thriving administrative centre. Many of its former residents became political and professional leaders both prior to and after the 1821 Greek War of Independence which was headquartered in Karytaina. Much has been recorded in Greek by Karytaina historians and through historical, church and statutory documents.
Researching our Karytaina ancestors is challenging. Records are hard to access and often written in Greek cursive. While there are well researched historical books on Karytaina, they are in Greek and not available electronically. Many Karytaina descendants do not speak Greek, so the richness of our history is not easily accessible.
As we began our own research we realized everyone from Karytaina was related, so sharing what we have learned helps us all. You can see these connections in our Karytaina Ancestry Tree on Ancestry.com by creating a free account.
Over time, we hope to make our shared history more accessible to the diaspora through this English language website.
If you are interested in supporting Karytaina Ancestry, your volunteer effort or funding would be very welcome. Funding DNA kits or the transcription and translation of important historical documents, would also be appreciated.
We also encourage you to contribute your own research and stories, by contacting us.
